Front de mer: Musée de Collioure, Collioure

3 June - 8 October 2023

A coastline, Canet-Collioure-Banyuls, like a concentrate of space. A date, 1940, like a precipitate of history. Numerous artists landed on the shores of the Catalan coast and mixed their destinies on its paths. Whether they were hiding, hoping for exile, experiencing the camps, militant, resisting or collaborating... all of them, through their art, bear witness to an era that could not be shortened.

A border area, a free and then occupied zone, an open door to a possible departure or a closed place of imprisonment, this coast, from Canet to Banyuls, became a territory in struggle. Since the exhibition Collioure, Babel of the Arts, the Collioure Museum continues its exploration of the little-known aspects of the artistic history of the Côte Vermeille.

With this new exhibition, the museum dives into the troubled waters of a dark year that transformed this seafront into a veritable war front.

On the occasion of the exhibition "Front de mer", Helene Bailly will lend a work by Albert Marquet, "Alger, vue de la ville et du port" (circa 1940), to the Musée de Collioure in France.
