How to become an artist when you are born a woman, at a time when those who belong to the "second sex" are asked to confine themselves to the domestic sphere? It was at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries that women united and fought to win the right to be creators in their own right.
Around the figure of Suzanne Valadon, the exhibition highlights the artists of her time and questions through them the access to training, the artistic networks to which they belong, the subjects they take up and their contribution to the avant-garde movements... in a society where the place of women is not equal to that of men.
The exhibition brings together nearly 50 artists and 100 works: famous like Camille Claudel, Marie Laurencin, Sonia Delaunay, Séraphine de Senlis or Tamara de Lempicka, and others less known or sometimes forgotten by posterity.
As part of the "Valadon et ses contemporaines, peintres et sculptrices, 1880-1940" exhibition, Helene Bailly Gallery will lend Suzanne Valadon's "Nu dans un intérieur" (1895) to the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Limoges.
