CERAMIC BRUSSELS: Pablo Picasso Solo Show

22 - 26 January 2025

Pablo Picasso discovered the art of ceramics in 1946, during a visit to the Pottery Fair in Vallauris, a

small Provencal town renowned for its crafts. It was there that he met Suzanne and Georges Ramié,

owners of the Madoura workshop, a landmark in the ceramics tradition. Fascinated by the infinite

possibilities offered by this discipline, Picasso was immediately seduced by the plasticity of the clay

and the firing processes, which opened up new creative perspectives.

With the help of the Ramié family, he began experimenting in their studio, transforming everyday

objects such as plates, vases and dishes into unique works of art. Picasso reinvented ceramics with

his own personal vision, exploring mythological, animal or abstract motifs, while playing with shapes and textures.

His collaboration with the Ramié family spanned more than two decades, giving rise to almost 4,000 ceramic pieces.

This medium enabled him to express a different kind of artistic freedom, where the living matter of

clay dialogues with his prolific creativity. Thanks to Vallauris and the support of the Ramié family, Picasso redefined the status of ceramics, transforming it from a utilitarian art form into a contemporary and deeply personal artistic language.

It is precisely this approach and vision that we wish to highlight with our solo show dedicated

to Picasso, organized for the second edition of Céramique Brussels. The scenography offers an

immersive experience, with a view of a set table. Behind the table will be posters from Vallauris, recalling Picasso’s wild adventure in the Ramié’s Madoura studio.
