ÉCOLE DE PARIS -
HELENE BAILLY is a Parisian art gallery that exhibits works from the School of Paris, featuring artists such as Marc Chagall, Tsuguharu Foujita, Marie Laurencin, and Moïse Kisling.
The “School of Paris” refers less to a specific artistic style than to the mosaic of international artists active in Paris in the early 20th century. In the capital, particularly in the Montparnasse district, creators from across Europe and beyond gathered and enriched the French art scene. Amedeo Modigliani from Italy, Marc Chagall from the Russian Empire, and Tsuguharu Foujita from Japan are among the most notable of these cosmopolitan talents. Many of them became involved in the avant-garde movements of the time, working in the wake of Fauvism, Cubism, or Surrealism, while maintaining highly personal approaches.
Their works, often figurative, explored a wide range of themes such as urban life, portraiture, and dreamlike visions.
Despite their differences, they shared a common foundation: Paris, then the world’s artistic capital, whose cultural vitality fueled their creativity. With the outbreak of the Second World War, this first School of Paris dispersed, but its legacy remains essential.
