ALBERT MARQUET | SOLO SHOW : 71, RUE DU FAUBOURG SAINT-HONORÉ, PARIS 8E

16 September - 16 October 2025
Overview

HELENE BAILLY gallery is pleased to present its monographic exhibition dedicated to Albert Marquet (1875–1947), a major figure in 20th-century French painting.

Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he studied in Gustave Moreau’s atelier alongside Charles Camoin and Henri Matisse, Albert Marquet was involved from the outset in the Fauvist movement.

Throughout his career, he retained a Fauvist touch, visible in the simplification of forms and the independence of color. An unclassifiable artist, Marquet maintained a singular stylistic freedom. This exhibition reflects that trajectory: it opens with a youthful work from his student years and concludes with views of Algiers, where he had purchased a house high above the city.

A tireless traveler, Marquet explored France, Europe, and North Africa, drawing inspiration from the luminous impressions gathered during his journeys. His views of ports - Algiers, Stockholm, La Rochelle - form variations on the theme of water, which he approached as a shifting, contemplative space. Far from the picturesque or anecdotal, he sought to capture the muted play of light, the soft lines of the horizon, and the subtle harmony between sky and architecture.

A modest man, deeply respected by his peers, Albert Marquet remains a key figure in modern French painting. He succeeded in conveying a sense of quiet stability within a gaze constantly in motion, establishing himself as a true master of landscape as an intimate experience.
