Van Dongen – Deauville m'allait comme un gant: Musée des Franciscaines, Deauville

8 July - 18 September 2022

A plaque affixed to Les Planches de Deauville reminds us of this: "From 1913 to 1963, the painter Kees Van Dongen (1877-1968) painted, drew and animated the summers of Deauville for 50 years. This loyalty of the artist will be the subject of an exhibition of his works in 2022 of his works in connection with Deauville.
Portraits painted of personalities frequenting Deauville, beach scenes, horse races, table games, evenings at the casino and the wild nights dancing to jazz or tango show how the artist found in the atmosphere of Deauville his favourite pictorial subjects, emblematic of the Roaring Twenties. A privileged witness to the society of his time, Van Dongen spiced up his works with a mocking, casual and ironic spirit.
The original works of the artist brought together for this new exhibition are enriched by an important iconographic material: photographs, caricatures, books and publications illustrating Van Dongen's presence in Deauville.

On the occasion of the exhibition "Van Dongen - Deauville m'allait comme un gant", Helene Bailly Gallery will lend two works by Kees van Dongen "Avenue du Bois de Boulogne" (circa 1955) and "Le cheval porte-bonheur" (1951) to the Musée des Franciscaines in Deauville.
